Money will be used to underwrite signature leadership, fitness and empowerment program for teen girls
Naples, Fla., January 16, 2020 – Wellfit Girls, a Southwest Florida nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring, challenging and empowering teen girls, received a $27,500 grant through United Way of Collier County’s Innovation Fund. The money will be used to underwrite Summit Sisters, Wellfit Girls’ comprehensive multi-year leadership, fitness and empowerment program.
Summit Sisters builds resiliency and deepens relationships with youth through in-depth fitness & leadership training. The curriculum challenges girls to step out of their comfort zone and into confident and empowered leaders teaching interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, vision and goals, body image and bold leadership.
“This grant is a game changer for us,” says Executive Director Colby Robertson. “Teen girls are faced with so many challenges that directly impact their self-esteem, social and emotional behaviors and desire to take on leadership roles. This grant validates the important work we are doing to change lives in Collier County. I am extremely grateful to United Way of Collier County for believing in our mission and having the courage to invest in our organization.”
The Innovation Fund is a collective impact grant that can address existing gaps in service, or new and evolving needs in Collier County by funding innovative, problem-solving projects and programs. The grant will allow Wellfit Girls to offer more scholarships to families who are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). ALICE is a new way of defining and understanding the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level but struggle to manage their most basic needs.
2020 will mark the seventh year of Wellfit Girls programming in Southwest Florida. Beginning in January, the girls will meet twice weekly after school for 20 weeks with one day dedicated to leadership and the other day dedicated to fitness. The program culminates in June with a domestic expedition to Montana in partnership with Montana Wilderness School.
